About
William O’Neill is an internationally recognized leader in interventional cardiology and currently works at the Center for Structural Heart Disease at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. After earning his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, he completed his residency there and later trained in cardiology at University of Michigan Hospital. He went on to hold major leadership roles at the University of Michigan, William Beaumont Hospital, and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine before returning to Detroit in 2012 to lead Henry Ford’s structural heart program, where he focused on minimally invasive treatments for heart failure and valve disease.
Throughout his career, Dr. O’Neill helped pioneer several groundbreaking cardiac procedures, including early randomized trials of balloon angioplasty and intracoronary streptokinase therapy for heart attacks, as well as innovations in balloon valvuloplasty and outpatient angioplasty. A founding member of the Interventional Cardiology Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and former chair within the American College of Cardiology, he has authored more than 300 scientific publications and edited one of the first textbooks in interventional cardiology. His many honors include the Distinguished Alumni Award from Wayne State, the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Seymour Gordon Award from the American Heart Association.
