Dr. Andrej Spec

Dr. Andrej Spec is an infectious disease specialist, physician-scientist, and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex fungal infections, particularly among immunocompromised patients, transplant recipients, and others at high risk for invasive infections. After earning his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Dr. Spec completed his internal medicine residency at Rush University Medical Center and his infectious diseases fellowship and master's training in clinical investigation at Washington University.

Dr. Spec is internationally recognized for his expertise in medical mycology and has dedicated his career to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of patients with serious fungal diseases. As Director of the Invasive Mycoses Clinic and Section Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at Washington University, he leads clinical and research efforts focused on infections caused by organisms such as Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Candida, and Aspergillus. His work spans multicenter clinical trials, global epidemiologic studies, and the development of new antifungal therapies, helping advance care for patients facing some of the most challenging infectious diseases.
