Dr. Ilan Schwartz

Ilan Schwartz MD PhD FRCPC FIDSA FECMM is an Infectious Diseases physician and clinical mycologist. After completing medical training at the University of Manitoba and Queen’s University, he earned a Doctorate of Medical Sciences from the University of Antwerp / Institute of Tropical Medicine for research on Emergomyces africanus, a novel dimorphic fungus in immunocompromised patients in South Africa. He joined the University of Alberta in 2018, and then Duke University in 2022, where he is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Clinical Research Unit in the Division of Infectious Diseases. He rounds on the Transplant Infectious Diseases service at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Schwartz’s research interests are in emerging fungal infections, dimorphic fungi, and global health. He has published >100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and is a widely sought speaker. He is a co-author of the ECMM OneWorld guidelines on diagnosis and treatment of the endemic mycoses and candidiasis, and the histoplasmosis guidelines of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). He is actively involved with the Mycoses Study Group Education & Research Consortium, where he serves on the Board of Directors. He is a Deputy Editor of Mycoses and an Associate Editor of Clinical Infectious Diseases.
