About

Dr. Reaford “RJ” Blackburn is an internal medicine physician at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he serves as Director of the Medical Oncology Wards Service. Originally from rural eastern Kentucky, he earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville and completed his internal medicine residency and chief year at UAB. After several years practicing as a hospitalist and helping develop a community-based residency program in Kentucky, he returned to UAB to care for patients with complex medical needs. Dr. Blackburn is known for his thoughtful, down-to-earth approach, taking the time to ensure patients and their families feel informed, supported, and comfortable during challenging hospital stays.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Blackburn is deeply involved in training medical residents, with a strong focus on creating a collaborative and supportive care environment. His background in both community and academic medicine allows him to bring a practical, patient-focused perspective to each case, emphasizing clear communication, teamwork, and continuity of care. Whether at the bedside or in the classroom, he is committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality care while helping patients navigate complex conditions with confidence.
