About Dr. Cosby Stone

Cosby Stone, Jr., MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Stone has expertise in epidemiology, clinical drug allergy, and translational mechanistic projects in drug and vaccine allergy. He is engaged in pioneering clinical, translational, and implementation science research on beta-lactam antibiotic allergies with a secondary interest in immediate excipient allergies to alpha-gal and polyethylene glycols/polysorbates. His research has contributed to changes in current guidelines for testing and managing suspected antibiotic, vaccine, and excipient allergies and includes discoveries that resulted in changes to FDA safety recommendations and package inserts. He leads studies and clinical efforts aimed at implementing and optimizing antibiotic allergy risk assessment and low-risk de-labeling across Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

In 2020, Dr. Stone received the Vanderbilt/APCCM Teaching Award. In 2021, he received the AAAAI Faculty Development Award. The AAAAI Foundation gives this annual award to promising young investigators seeking to understand the scientific basis for issues faced by practitioners of allergy and immunology. Dr. Stone currently serves AAAAI as the co-chair and chair of the vaccines committee from 2020-2024 and as a member of the AAAAI’s Adverse Reactions to Drugs, Biologics, and Latex committee.

Dr. Stone has an active practice within the Drug Allergy Clinic at the?Vanderbilt Asthma, Sinus and Allergy Program (VASAP). VASAP is a multi-specialty clinic treating complex allergy and immunology conditions. He treats patients with various ailments, including anaphylaxis, alpha-gal allergy, drug allergies, and conditions that resemble medication allergies. He also leads a chemotherapy desensitization program to safely provide ongoing treatment for patients who are truly allergic to these crucial agents.
