About
Dr. Bob Smouse, MD, FACR, is an Associate Professor of Radiology & Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. He earned his Bachelor Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Florida, and his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is a leading interventional radiologist, clinician, academic and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in interventional radiology, endovascular surgery and clinical research.
Dr. Smouse is founder of BrightWater Medical, Inc, a medical device company that developed an innovative urologic and biliary stent technology which significantly impacted the treatment of ureteral blockages by interventional radiologists. His company was one of the first startups to be invested in by OSF Ventures, the corporate investment arm of OSF HealthCare, and was recently acquired by Utah-based Merit Medical Systems. Dr. Smouse invented the ConvertX® Stent System, a medical device that reduces the need for multiple procedures for patients suffering from severe urinary tract and bile duct obstructions.
Dr. Smouse also provides interventional medical services to local hospitals through Central Illinois Radiology Associates, and is President of Respiratory Motion, Inc (RMI). RMI created a revolutionary technology, ExSpiron, that could measure a person’s breathing rate without the need for invasive methods. He is a medical consultant and scientific advisory board member for several medical device industry leaders, including Boston Scientific, Cook Medical, Novate Medical, Endoshape, the Medicines Company, and Varian Medical. Dr. Smouse has been involved in more than 30 international and national clinical research trials as the Global, National, and Local Principal Investigator and is the author of nearly 150 scientific publications and presentations.
