Dr. Joseph Chen

Welcome! Dr Joseph Chen at Kaiser Permanente is a board-certified Complex Benign Surgical Gynecologist with a subspecialty focus on endometriosis, fibroids, and chronic pelvic pain. He has a very high-volume surgical practice dedicated solely to those issues. Dr Joseph Chen is a Fellow for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist and American College of Surgeons for his surgical expertise, and has his specialty certification in complex gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr Joseph Chen was born and raised in Taiwan and immigrated to the Bay Area as a young child. He eventually left California and completed his education in the Midwest. He then completed his residency in Arizona, followed by a 2-year Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) Fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center - one of the largest healthcare systems in the South. He has published peer-reviewed articles and presented surgical tutorials and award-winning talks at national conferences on topics such as adenomyosis, reproductive health, surgical education, and innovation. He also participates in local media news coverage on reproductive health advocacy, and has become nationally certified as a surgical coach faculty for surgeons around the country.

As a surgical specialist, Dr Joseph Chen’s clinical philosophy is to always put the patient's goals and wishes first. He will work hard to make sure patients feel heard and respected. In addition, Dr Joseph Chen uses a team approach when it comes to patient health, so patients can trust that the healthcare professionals taking care of them always have their best interests in mind and have the skillsets to handle concerns. For endometriosis patients, Dr Joseph Chen is one of the surgeons in the Kaiser regional endometriosis care center, where they utilize a high-quality multidisciplinary approach that may include excision/treatment of endometriosis of all organs (pelvic, ovarian, bladder, colon/intestines and thoracic as examples). He is closely collaborative with surgical colleagues who are also passionate about endometriosis care. Dr Joseph Chen has a unique interest in fertility preservation and also works with infertility specialists, pain care teams, physical therapists, and other specialties to ensure each endometriosis patient has an individualized treatment plan for this difficult condition.
