Peripartum Pelvic Floor Disorders Explained

Pregnancy and childbirth have a significant impact on the pelvic floor, often more than patients realize and even more still than most of our current postpartum care models are designed to address. In this episode of the BackTable OBGYN podcast, hosts Dr. Mark Hoffman and Dr. Amy Park welcome Dr. Lisa Hickman, a urogynecologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon from The Ohio State University, to discuss peripartum pelvic floor disorders and her dedicated clinic for women with advanced obstetric lacerations.

About

As a physician and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Lisa Hickman specializes in the care of women with pelvic floor disorders. She became passionate about this specialty after seeing the effect pelvic floor disorders have on women, and realizing the ability of physicians in her profession to not only treat these conditions but also help women return to the life they want to live.

Dr. Hickman’s experiences in residency and fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic solidified her desire to devote her career to academic medicine. She cared for a wide spectrum of women with diverse conditions and was trained in a variety of innovative surgical techniques and treatments for pelvic floor disorders. These experiences enable her to offer state-of-the-art-treatments and tailor a patient’s management specifically to her needs. She also learned the importance of educating tomorrow’s leaders and performing high-impact clinical research.

Working at Ohio State will allow her to get involved in training medical students as well as explore her research interests, such as pelvic floor disorders in pregnancy and the postpartum period, obstetric anal sphincter injuries and bowel control issues. Dr. Lisa Hickman’s commitment to advancing the science of medicine in her field has resulted in a variety of novel research publications that inform medical and surgical decision-making. Prior to medical school, Dr. Hickman was first author on a publication in the New England Journal of Medicine on a genetic predisposition for hypothalamic amenorrhea. She has published multiple articles on pelvic floor issues that occur during and immediately after pregnancy. In her fellowship, she also completed the first prospective study on same-day discharge after minimally invasive sacrocolpopexy.
