About
Dr. Michelle E. Van Kuiken is a urologist who specializes in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She performs surgical and nonsurgical treatments for pelvic organ prolapse (a condition in which pelvic organs, such as the bladder, have fallen out of place because their supporting tissues are damaged), urinary tract and vaginal fistulas (abnormal openings in or between organs), urethral diverticulum (when a pocket forms on the urethra, the tube that lets urine drain from the bladder), urethral stricture (a narrowing of the urethra caused by inflammation or scar tissue) and complications from transvaginal mesh (implanted material used in some female pelvic floor surgeries).
In addition to providing pelvic floor reconstruction, Van Kuiken cares for male and female patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction, including overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, urinary retention, recurrent urinary tract infections, and pelvic or bladder pain syndromes. She also cares for patients with complex neurological conditions that can affect the bladder, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries.
Van Kuiken earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. She completed a residency in urology at Loyola Medicine and a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) at the University of California, Los Angeles.
