Palliative Care in Urology

Often misunderstood as end-of-life care, palliative care is actually about improving quality of life at any stage of serious illness. In this episode of BackTable Urology, Dr. Ashwin Kotwal, a geriatrician and palliative care physician at UCSF, and Dr. Pauline Filippou, a urologic oncologist at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California join hosts Dr. Gina Badalato and Dr. Lindsay Hampson to discuss the importance of palliative care in the field of urology.

About

Dr. Pauline Filippou is a urologist specializing in urologic oncology, with a clinical focus on prostate, bladder, kidney, adrenal, testis and penile cancer. She is also trained to deliver palliative care alongside urologic care in appropriate situations, which enhances her ability to ensure that her patients’ quality of life and personal goals are a top priority. Aside from cancer care, she also has training in the medical and surgical management of a variety of urologic problems.
Hearing the words “you have cancer” can be a life-changing, jarring experience. It sets patients and their loved ones on a complex emotional and physical journey that can feel lonely and uncertain. Dr. Filippou’s goal is to help patients reclaim control of their journey, and to walk with them as they navigate the road from diagnosis through treatment. She strives to do this by supporting patients with their personalized health goals and helping them be active participants in all aspects of decision-making surrounding their care. Families are impacted by a cancer diagnosis as well, and it is important to her to partner with her patients and their loved ones to ensure they receive the support they need.
Paulime was born and raised in the Bay Area and is thrilled to be back home. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of California, San Diego, graduating magna cum laude. After college, she spent several years teaching 7th grade life science in the Oakland Unified public school district. Though her love of teaching never waned, she decided a career in medicine was a better fit. She graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco in 2015. Her research and patient interactions during medical school spurred a passion for urology, and she completed a general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She decided to focus on urologic cancer care and moved back to the West Coast to complete a Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship at the University of Washington. She joined Kaiser Permanente in 2022 and look forward to contributing to the care of her community as part of the team.
