About

Dr. Shahrokh Shariat is a pioneering physician-scientist and academic leader whose 25-year career has been defined by groundbreaking cancer research, translational innovation, and a deep commitment to education, mentorship, and human health. A global authority in urologic oncology, he has transformed how bladder and prostate cancers are diagnosed, treated, and understood, while expanding access to science and higher education through collaboration, shared goals, and visionary leadership.


Since 2013, Dr. Shariat has served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology and Acting Chair of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the Medical University of Vienna and Vienna General Hospital. He also holds adjunct professorships at Weill Cornell Medical Centre (New York), the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre (Dallas), and Charles University (Prague). He is Honorary Professor of Urology at the University of Jordan (Amman) and Al Ahliya University (Amman), and holds honorary doctorates from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Bucharest) and Semmelweis University (Budapest).


A prolific scholar, Dr. Shariat has published over 2,195 peer-reviewed articles (Scopus h-index 135 with >84,000 citations; Google Scholar h-index 159 with >113,700 citations), more than 700 non-peer-reviewed papers, and over 30 book chapters. His laboratory holds four patents and has advanced novel biomarkers, diagnostics, and therapeutic strategies from cell-line drug screening through preclinical validation into Phase I clinical trials—an exemplar of true bench-to-bedside research. His work on integrative genomics, epigenomics, personalized medicine, and predictive modelling has reshaped cancer care worldwide and informs international guidelines.


He has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Matula Award from the European Urological Association (2014) and the Gold Cystoscope Award from the American Urological Association (2017). In addition, he serves as President of both the Austrian Urological Society and the Central European Urological Society, fostering scientific exchange and capacity building across borders. He leads multiple international collaborations such as the Bladder Cancer Research Consortium, the Bladder Cancer Detection Group, and the Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma Collaboration, and spearheads large prospective clinical trials.


Beyond academia, Dr. Shariat is deeply committed to humanitarian work. He heads a medical charity for refugees, advises additional charitable organizations, and advocates for equitable cancer care by bridging high-resource and resource-limited settings with scalable, evidence-based solutions.
