About
Dr. Gregory Makris is a consultant in endovascular therapies and interventional radiology at Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Radiology and active member of the national and interventional radiology community having held positions as chairman of the trainee committees in the British Society of Interventional Radiology as well as in the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE). He graduated from the medical school of Athens with a distinction and then pursued a Ph.D in vascular surgery at Imperial College of London, UK. This was followed by an Academic Clinical Fellowship in clinical imaging at Cambridge University and a fellowship in endovascular surgery and interventional radiology at Oxford University Hospitals, UK.
Dr. Makris is passionate about research and he is the main author of many peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, member of the CVIR endovascular journal editorial board as well as peer reviewer for a number of international journals. He is also the past-chairman of the European forum for interventional radiology trainees (ETF) under the auspices of CIRSE and past chair of the BSIR trainee committee (2018-2019) with significant work on understanding and improving IR trainings standards in Europe at an undergraduate and postgraduate level (https://www.cirse.org/ ).
His main interests include vascular and women’s health, IR education (https://irjuniors.com ) and raising awareness around the role of IR in global health. He recently gave a TEDx talk on maternal mortality and the role of IR in low income countries (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7UorbpdbF8 ) and he is currently working on establishing an IR training program in Uganda.
When not in the cath-lab Greg enjoys being at the gym, playing basketball or a good movie at home.
