What does day-to-day interventional radiology look like in the military? Here’s a firsthand account. Dr. John York, interventional radiologist at University of California San Diego with 37 years of active duty in the Navy joins host Dr. Ally Baheti to share his experiences and perspectives on being an interventional radiologist in the military.

About

John York, MD, is a board-certified diagnostic and interventional radiologist who uses image-guided, minimally invasive, non-surgical approaches to diagnose and treat disease. He enjoys all facets of interventional radiology with a focus on venous disease including varicose veins, tumor ablation and musculoskeletal pain caused by osteoarthritis. Dr. York has spent almost 20 years practicing vascular and interventional radiology, serving in a variety of institutions from large military hospitals, to forward deployed combat hospitals, to outpatient vascular access centers. A constant theme in his approach to medicine has been a laser-like focus on doing what is best for the patient.

Dr. York completed interventional radiology fellowship training and diagnostic radiology residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He earned his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. Dr. York completed his undergraduate studies at the United States Naval Academy and previously served in naval aviation with the United States Navy. Dr. York is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, and the Western Angiographic and Interventional Society. Dr. York has held a variety of leadership positions in his career serving as executive officer at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va., and as the officer in charge of the Expeditionary Medical Facility in Djibouti, Africa. He enjoys contributing to the development of the physician medical leaders of the future. In his free time, he enjoys surfing, hiking, volunteering at the local animal shelter and spending time with his family.
