About Dr. Richard Saxon

Richard R. Saxon, MD, FSIR, is with North County Radiology, providing interventional services at multiple institutions in North County, including the Tri-City and Palomar Health Care Districts. He did his undergraduate training at University of California, Berkeley (graduating with a certificate of distinction as one of the top 11 graduates in his year), received his MD from University of California, Los Angeles (AOA) and went to University of California, San Francisco for his radiology residency. Dr. Saxon completed his interventional radiology fellowship at the Dotter Institute at Oregon Health and Science University in 1993 and stayed as an assistant professor until 1997, when he moved to San Diego and began his private practice, also serving as a clinical assistant professor at UCSD.
Dr. Saxon has been actively involved in clinical research throughout his career. His research has included the development and use of stent grafts for arterial applications (National P.I. on the VIABAHN PMA trial and VIPER post market trials and participated in the VBX approval trial). He conducted groundbreaking bench research on the use of stent grafts for TIPS and he performed the first human TIPS stent grafts using handmade devices while at The Dotter Institute, as well as helping design and develop the VIATORR device. He was on the steering committee for and participated in ZILVER PTX drug eluting stent trial and was site PI on the Lutonix DCB trial. He is currently very active in endovascular therapy of all kinds, including the treatment of acute stroke and limb ischemia. Dr. Saxon has lectured worldwide on the results of his clinical research. Dr. Saxon has frequently been recognized throughout his career as a US and San Diego “Top Doctor”.
