Malpractice Litigation & Advocacy

This month we take a high level view of the landscape of 'tort reform' in the US (and what does that even mean?). Physician-lawyer Dr. Shilpa Mathew, MD JD, walks us through some basics of tort law and advocacy efforts in the US, how you can get involved, and why it matters. Note: Dr. Mathew's views expressed in this podcast are strictly her own, and not representative of her employer or ACOG.

About

Dr. Shilpa Mathew grew up in Sacramento, California, where her parents worked at Kaiser Permanente for over 30 years. Having started as a patient herself, she considers herself “home grown” within Kaiser Permanente. She views it as a privilege to focus on women’s health and is passionate about creating a therapeutic space centered on their needs, recognizing that women often care for others selflessly—sometimes at the expense of their own well-being.

Dr. Mathew is double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Lifestyle Medicine. In her practice, she emphasizes an integrative approach, combining traditional medical treatments with lifestyle and behavioral interventions such as nutrition, physical activity, and stress management to improve patient outcomes and overall well-being.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Mathew is deeply committed to advocacy for both patients and providers. Before becoming a physician, she studied and practiced law, which fuels her strong interest in the intersection of medicine and healthcare policy. She serves as the OB/GYN Health Liaison for her department, where she works to educate and engage the community on important women’s health issues. She is also actively involved in shaping health policy through her role as Co-Legislative Chair for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in California.
