Dr. Fawaz Al-Mufti

Fawaz Al-Mufti, MD is a world-renowned, award-winning, triple-board certified neurologist, neurointensivist, and neuroendovascular surgeon: one of only a few in the country. After graduating from medical school in Iraq and serving with Doctors Without Borders in emergency medicine, Dr. Al-Mufti completed his internship at Harvard before pursuing specialty training in neurology at SUNY Stony Brook, neurocritical care at Columbia University and Weill Cornell, and neuroendovascular surgery at Rutgers University.


He joined Westchester Medical Center in 2018 and currently serves as the Director of the Neuroendovascular Surgery Fellowship, Director of the Neurocritical Care Unit, and Director of the Westchester Medical Center Center for Neuroscience Research and Innovation, in addition to his roles as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation and Vice Chair of Neurology (Research) at New York Medical College. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, oversees research in the Brain and Spine Institute, and has mentored over 200 trainees. He has designed and led multiple national and international clinical trials and serves as Principal Investigator for several multi-site funded studies.


He serves on scientific and educational committees of the American Academy of Neurology, the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN), and the Neurocritical Care Society. He is Chair of the AAN Interventional Neurology Section, Treasurer and Board Member of SVIN, and Global Chair and executive Director of Mission Thrombectomy, a worldwide advocacy initiative to expand access to stroke thrombectomy.


Dr. Al-Mufti has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and listed in Marquis Who’s Who in Medicine. His years with Doctors Without Borders, working in conflict zones under some of the most austere conditions, shaped his philosophy of patient care: every patient must be treated first as a person, and always as family. He champions a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach centered on patient education and shared decision-making.
