Enhancing Cardiology Practice Through Radiation Protection
What do all image-guided interventionalists and surgeons have in common? Over time, the radiation exposure and the weight of lead begin to take a toll, often in ways no one talks about until it’s too late. In this episode of BackTable Cardiology, host Dr. Hady Lichaa sits down with Dr. Bob Foster, interventional cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer of Rampart IC, for a candid conversation about the hidden occupational risks facing today’s cath lab teams.

About
Dr. Bob Foster is an interventional cardiologist and the founder of the medical technology company Rampart. After years of performing procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab while wearing heavy lead aprons for radiation protection, he suffered a severe spinal injury that nearly forced him to leave the profession he loved. This experience revealed the physical toll that traditional radiation protection can take on clinicians and inspired him to pursue a better solution for healthcare teams working in high-radiation environments.
Motivated by his own injury and the widespread orthopedic problems faced by interventional specialists, Dr. Foster partnered with engineers and designers to create Rampart, a system designed to provide comprehensive radiation protection without the need for heavy lead aprons. His work aims to improve safety, mobility, and longevity for physicians and staff in procedure rooms, helping clinicians continue caring for patients while reducing the occupational risks associated with traditional protective equipment.
