Live from SGIM 2023 in Aurora, Colorado! We talk to a panel of Addiction Medicine specialists who recap their outstanding talk on all of the exciting developments in treating addiction. We review major policy changes, trends in drug overdose, outpatient screening for alcohol use, and all of the ways we might be using psychedelics to treat addiction. About
Dr. Katherine Mullins specializes in internal medicine and addiction medicine, with a particular focus on HIV medicine, harm reduction, and the health of people experiencing homelessness. I am deeply committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care to individuals who face structural barriers to accessing treatment. In her role as medical director of the Sunset Terrace Family Health Center at NYU Langone and interim medical director of the Community Medicine Program—Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, Dr. Mullins works to address these barriers at both the individual and systemic levels.
At Sunset Terrace, Dr. Mullins provides primary healthcare, HIV specialty care, and medical treatment for patients with substance use disorders. Through the Community Medicine Program, Dr. Mullins oversees clinical operations for 12 drop-in centers, shelters, and single-room-occupancy hotels, in addition to two community clinics that are open to all. Their multidisciplinary team delivers medical care, health screenings, outreach, health education, case management, crisis intervention, and long-term counseling, both in person and by telemedicine, to over 6,000 unique patients per year.
Throughout her career, Dr. Mullins has been committed to strengthening the capacity of the primary care system to serve vulnerable populations. Dr. Mullins began her medical training at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she graduated with distinction as a Population Health Scholar. She completed her primary care/social internal medicine residency and addiction medicine fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Mullins serves as the communications director for the New York Society of Addiction Medicine and have contributed to the Curbsiders addiction medicine podcast. As a clinical assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Dr. Mullins is dedicated to teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians. These experiences continue to fuel her commitment to the delivery of comprehensive, person-centered care.
