About Dr. Steven Abramowitz

Steven Abramowitz, MD, is Chair of Vascular Surgery for MedStar Health and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. As a board-certified vascular surgeon, he specializes in the treatment of aortic disease including aneurysms and dissection, venous occlusive disease, carotid artery disease, and peripheral arterial disease including critical limb ischemia and claudication through the use of endovascular and open surgical techniques.

Dr. Abramowtiz's clinical interests include central venous occlusive disease, aortic aneurysmal disease, vascular access for hemodialysis, peripheral vascular disease, and limb salvage. His research interests currently include vascular surgery education, iliocaval reconstruction, and the treatment of critical limb ischemia.

Dr. Abramowitz received his medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in integrated vascular surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center before joining MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Abramowitz is the only physician at MedStar Washington Hospital Center performing endovascular iliocaval reconstruction, a two-stage minimally invasive reconstructive technique that has been paramount in the treatment of patients diagnosed with vena caval stenosis and central venous occlusive disease. Central venous occlusion is a debilitating disease, which, if left untreated, results in limb laceration and chronic limb ischemia.

Dr. Abramowitz is an advocate for the improvement of postoperative recovery for patients receiving radial artery catheterization procedures. These improvements will help individuals being treated for venous disease heal faster, allowing them to walk sooner after surgery. He is also an advocate for finding ways to incorporate minimally invasive techniques into open surgery in order to reduce healing times as well as the exposure that comes with open surgical procedures.

Pearls for Using the Inari RevCore Device in Venous Stent Occlusions

The Inari RevCore device is a multidirectional debulking device commonly employed for recanalizing occluded venous stents. While achieving patency with the RevCore device may take time, the slow erosion of the clot contributes to improved patient outcomes and technical success.

The Fundamentals of Managing Venous Stent Rethrombosis

Vascular surgeon Dr. Steven Abramowitz and interventional radiologist Dr. Angelo Marino explain the causes of venous stent rethrombosis and the various strategies to manage these patients.

Tools & Techniques in Iliofemoral Stenting

Percutaneous iliofemoral venous stenting demands precise selection of tools and stents tailored to each clinical scenario. This article explores the strategic approaches for stent placement and sizing in both non-thrombotic and post-thrombotic conditions, aiming to enhance patient outcomes.

Periprocedural Pearls in Iliofemoral Stenting: Focus on Pre- & Post-Care

Iliofemoral vein stenting is explored in depth, focusing on critical aspects of procedural preparation and post-operative care. Learn more about medication strategies, patient discomfort management, imaging follow-ups, and the importance of regular surveillance for successful long-term outcomes.
