About
Dr. Nina Shapiro is a graduate of Cornell University, and received her MD from Harvard Medical School. She completed her Otolaryngology training at Harvard, and went on to pursue subspecialty Pediatric Otolaryngology training at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. For 25 years, Dr. Shapiro built a tertiary care Pediatric Otolaryngology program at UCLA, where she served as Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Director of Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat at the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.
Dr. Shapiro is the author of nearly 100 peer-reviewed research articles, 20 book chapters, and has edited a textbook on Pediatric Otolaryngology. She has given over 200 lectures both nationally and internationally on subjects including pediatric airway surgery, minimally invasive tonsillectomy techniques, and demographic disparities in access to subspecialty care.
Dr. Shapiro is passionate about deciphering medical information to the non-medical audience, and has written for multiple print and online sources including the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal. She is a regular Contributor to Forbes Healthcare. Dr. Shapiro has written three books, including Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your Child, HYPE: A Doctor’s Guide to Medical Myths, Exaggerated Claims and Bad Advice: How to Tell What’s Real and What’s Not, and The Ultimate Kids’ Guide to Being Super Healthy.
Dr. Shapiro is devoted to caring for children with ear, nose and throat conditions. She is a recipient of numerous research and clinical awards, and is recognized by her peers by being named in Los Angeles Magazine’s Top Doctors for many consecutive years.
